But here’s the truth:

The expat life is not new. People have been doing this for centuries.

Whether it was for trade, education, diplomacy, military service, or a better life, people have always moved across borders in search of something more. What’s different now is… we get to see it in real time.

We’re watching families in Portugal post their beach mornings.

We’re seeing digital nomads in Mexico City share their office views.

We’re reading Substack notes from women in Ghana, Bali, Doha, Lisbon.

But the core truth remains the same:

You are not crazy for wanting something different.

You are part of a long tradition of people who did.

So What’s an Expat—Really?

Here’s a quick breakdown that might help:

• Expat (expatriate): Someone who lives outside their native country, temporarily or permanently, without taking on full legal citizenship.

• Immigrant: Someone who moves to another country intending to settle long-term, often seeking permanent residency or citizenship (naturalization).

When someone moves abroad and eventually applies for citizenship, they’re no longer considered an expat; they’ve transitioned into immigrant status.

It’s not about status, it’s about intention.

Many of the people I meet in Doha have either just arrived… or they’ve been here for 10+ years.

Some are still “expats.”

Others have decided this is home and built their lives accordingly.

And what’s the worst that can happen?

You go. You don’t love it. You come back.

That’s not failure. That’s clarity.

You’re Not Crazy. You’re Becoming Someone New

Hi Friend,

Before the holidays, I had a conversation with a friend who’s deep in the final stages of moving abroad. The house is packed. Boxes everywhere. The family has moved out. It’s real now.

And what she said stuck with me:

“I thought I’d feel nothing but excitement… but instead, I’m asking myself, what am I even doing?”

I smiled.

Because I knew that exact feeling.

The Identity Shift No One Prepares You For

When you decide to move abroad, there’s this surge of energy at first.

You’re dreaming out loud. Making plans. Researching schools. Watching YouTube videos about grocery stores in Lisbon or life in Bali.

But then right around the corner comes this quiet, unnerving question:

“Am I actually doing this?”

And with it comes a wave of emotions:

• Denial: Is this too drastic? Should I just stay and figure it out here?

• Fear: Will we be okay? What if I don’t make friends?

• Uncertainty: What will I do with myself once we land?

I’m writing this to you from my mom’s house in New Jersey.

This trip back to the U.S. has felt a bit like a tour. Starting in Los Angeles for a one-day event with one of my amazing clients, now here on the East Coast, and then heading to North Carolina before I return to Doha.

Everywhere I go, I keep repeating the same truth:

It is possible for you to live abroad.

And the next question that always follows is: But how can I afford it?

You might be surprised by the answer.

Most people could live a better, more spacious life abroad on the exact same salary they’re making right now.

In many places, you could even build savings, reduce your stress, and gain time back with your family.

But here’s what really gets me:

So many of us are frustrated with life as we know it… but won’t even begin to explore how it could be different.

I get it. Change is uncomfortable.

As Tony Robbins said:

Change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change.

But sometimes, we don’t even know there’s another way.

42% of Americans have never left the country, and 1 in 6 have never left the state they were born in.

And let’s be real, what’s shown on TV? Propaganda.

They want you to believe the systems aren’t broken.

But they’re showing cracks in your everyday life, and you feel it.

So here’s what I’ve been telling everyone I’ve spoken to this week:

Most of them work in traditional 9–5s. And many believed that “remote work” would give them freedom to live anywhere.

But the truth is, not all remote jobs are created equal.

Amber Aziza said it best during her session at The Your Expat Life Summit:

“Work without borders means landing remote roles that actually move with you.”

3. Identify countries aligned with your values and lifestyle.

   Research visa options, school systems, and healthcare availability.

4. Audit your skill set.

   What remote friendly or freelance skills do you already have, and what could be monetized online?

5. Start building your network now.

   Follow expats in your dream country. Join online communities. Ask real people what their life is like.

Sometimes, it just takes seeing it to believe it.

This week, I was reminded of something I posted a year ago on social media:

A quick video I recorded in Doha, where I quietly admitted that expat life can feel really lonely.

I remember that version of me so clearly.

Everything felt new… but not in a good way.

The girls hadn’t adjusted to school.

I was juggling the weight of “did we make the right decision?”

We had no rhythm, no flow, just a lot of figuring it out on the fly.

And now, one year later?

I feel like a different person.

I’ve found my community.

I’ve hit my rhythm in the business.

The girls are thriving and fully involved in school and their activities.

Duane and I are in sync, including intentional date nights, not just passing glances between school runs and dinner dishes.

I go out with friends for dinner and drinks at least twice a month, something I didn’t think I’d find so quickly here.

I spend time at beach clubs without guilt, no longer hustling for every hour of rest.

Even my mom has come to visit us in Qatar (something I worried might never happen)… and she’s already planning her next trip back in January.

It’s wild what can happen in just one year.

What shifts when you make the move and give yourself time to settle.

If you’re in your “is this the right decision?” season, I promise I’ve been there.

So much can change in 12 months.

Yesterday, I had the honor of speaking with the Borderless Media community. I shared my story, answered questions, and supported families taking steps toward a life beyond borders.

But the thing that stuck out most: Many Americans never even get to that starting line.

Why This Still Matters — And Why It’s Getting Realer

Tariffs aren’t just a news headline—they’re a daily impact on what your family can afford, where you spend, and how long your savings last.

As of today:

• The U.S.–China tariff truce has been extended 90 more days, preventing a spike, but uncertainty lingers ahead of the holiday shopping season.

• The effective U.S. tariff rate is now an estimated 18.6%, the highest since the 1930s.

• Consumers are about to bear a much bigger share of the cost, report projections show Americans absorbing roughly 67% of future tariff pain as businesses raise prices.

• Starting August 29, even small packages from abroad will be taxed, and free rides will no longer be allowed under the $800 de minimis rule. Expect duties from 15% to 50%, or an $80 flat rate for undefined cases.

• Latin American and Indian goods are also increasingly impacted. India now faces a 50% U.S. tariff, threatening exports in textiles, shrimp, chemicals, and more.

• Critics warn these policies are fueling inflation and hitting families hard. U.S. households could lose an estimated $2,400 in 2025 alone.

It reminded me that our kids deserve to live in spaces where they can play, not just survive.

And we, as parents, deserve to work in ways that support our lives, not consume them.

That’s what we’ve found in Doha.

Not perfection. But peace.

A place where we’re not overworked, overextended, or constantly on edge.

We’re saving and living. Working and breathing.

So today, I want to ask you:

Where would you go if you could choose a life where your work supported your family, not ran it?

What would that version of freedom look like?

Because whether it’s Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Ghana, or the UAE—there are options.

And more importantly, you’re allowed to want more.

This summer has taken me across time zones and through so many emotions.

In the past few weeks, I’ve been in London, Miami, and Toronto—three very different cities, each offering a glimpse into the many versions of “home” I’ve lived through.

Toronto surprised me in the best way.

It felt like a beautiful blend of the America I remember and the UK—familiar yet comforting. The girls got to experience their first Kiddies Carnival, surrounded by West Indian music, food, and culture. They were in awe—and honestly, so was I.

Miami, on the other hand, left me uneasy.

It was lovely to be around family, but we didn’t really go out much. There’s always this low hum of “you just never know.”

One day, I was driving to Target with the girls. I must have annoyed another driver (I’m not even sure how), and she decided to cut in front of me and slam on her brakes twice—at a green light. In Florida, where guns are legal and tempers can escalate fast, I didn’t take any chances. I turned off the road, checked to make sure we weren’t being followed, and sat there for a moment with my hands shaking.

I’m still thinking about that moment.

Because I’ve realized something: America is where I was born—but it doesn’t feel like home anymore.

Doha does.

And it’s only been 10 months.

There, I feel calm.

I’m not constantly scanning for risk.

My daughters can run, explore, live. And I can work, create, and show up for my family without living in fear.

That feeling—that freedom—is why I created Your Expat Life.

Not to escape, but to expand.

And if you’ve ever had the thought:

This summer has been a beautiful blend of connection and chaos.

We’ve spent the past few weeks traveling—first to Florida, and now Toronto—visiting family, letting the girls experience a little bit of what life looked like for me growing up, and soaking in those little moments that only come from being fully present.

But I’ll be honest… I miss my time zone advantage.

Back in London or Doha, I usually get a solid 5–7 hour head start on my clients. It gives me space to move slower in the mornings, hit the gym, help the girls get settled, and then dive into work without distractions.

Now? I’m working two days a week, in the same time zone as everyone else, and it’s been a struggle. I feel the difference in my energy, my focus, and my flow.

It’s been a reminder of one of the quiet luxuries of living abroad:

Time. Space. The ability to design your day on your terms.

Still, I wouldn’t trade this season for anything. Watching the girls connect with cousins, visit the places that shaped me, and build new memories—it’s been its own kind of magic.

Summer always stretches me.

Right now, I’m writing from Florida—our first stop of the summer. It’s hot. The girls are full of energy. And yes, I’m doing my best to keep them off devices (which feels like an Olympic sport), all while still working and staying sane.

We actually left Qatar for London a week earlier than planned—two days after the Iran bombing. It wasn’t an emergency, but I felt like getting the girls out sooner was the right call. Duane flew in a week later, and things have settled back in Doha. Still, I miss the rhythm of the life we built there. The safety. The calm. The normalcy of school pickups and grocery runs that don’t come with tension.

Being back in America… it’s different.

I don’t say that lightly. I’ve always loved the opportunities America provides—so many of us have built something from nothing here. But it’s not the same country I left in 2015.

I feel on edge walking into a store. I hold my breath in ways I didn’t used to.

And while we try to carry on with joy—celebrating little things like my daughter turning 7 and losing her tooth (even though the tooth fairy had the nerve not to show up)—I keep coming back to one question:

What if there’s a different way to live?

Not just a vacation. A reset. A life where your nervous system can relax.

Two days after Independence Day, I’m left with a quieter, more reflective feeling. The celebrations feel different this year—I’m seeing a country passing what’s being called the One Big Beautiful Bill, and its impact is already being felt.

This sweeping legislation includes massive Medicaid cuts, work requirements, and coverage changes estimated to push 11–17 million Americans off their health plans over the next decade—especially affecting the most vulnerable groups. One of my peers, a self-employed, single woman over 40, said she worries about how this will hit her. This past week has brought a whirlwind of economic changes that will touch your daily life whether you stay in the US or venture abroad. While politicians frame these as strategic maneuvers, let's talk about what's really happening to your purchasing power.

🧾 April’s Economic Shockwaves

• April 5: America slapped a 10% tax on virtually everything entering the country—yes, from the groceries in your pantry to the laptop you're reading this on.

• April 9: The hammer fell harder with 20% additional costs on European imports and a staggering 54% on Chinese goods (think about what's in your home right now and where it came from).

• April 12: China didn't take this lying down, retaliating with a 125% tariff on US products—devastating news for American businesses with global markets.

• April 13: The US opened investigations into semiconductor imports that could cascade through the tech industry and beyond.

Every mother I speak with is already feeling the stretched budget that comes with raising a family in America. These tariffs aren't abstract policy—they're about how much more you'll pay for your children's clothes, their electronics for school, and even the food on your dinner table.

As I connect with families considering their move abroad, I keep hearing the same hesitation: "We're waiting for the economy to improve before we make our move." This caution seems reasonable, given that recession predictions dominate headlines and uncertainty clouds financial forecasts.
