Moving Abroad Won’t Fix Your Life
Why most relocation decisions are emotional and how Global Citizens do it differently.

There’s a narrative right now that goes something like this:
“Move here. It’s better.”
“Taxes are lower.”
“Cost of living is cheaper.”
“Look at my day in the life.”
And if you’re feeling stretched, tired of the noise, or questioning your current environment… It’s seductive.
But let me say this clearly:
Relocating your life & business is not a simple shift.
It requires an intentional decision-making process.
And if you’re making it from escapism, you will carry the same dissatisfaction with you to a different timezone.
The Rise of Relocation as Content
We are living in the era of relocation-as-marketing.
Relocation companies are telling you where to move.
Influencers are filming aesthetic mornings from Portugal, Spain or Mexico.
Your mentor announces she moved to Dubai and suddenly it feels like the next power move.
But here’s what’s missing:
Why are you moving?
Not “why does it look appealing.”
Not “why does it seem smart.”
Not “why is everyone talking about it.”
Why does it make sense for your life, your business, your family, your nervous system?
Escapism vs. Intention
There is nothing wrong with wanting change.
But there is a difference between escaping discomfort & designing an aligned life.
Escapism sounds like:
I just need to get out of here.
Everything will be easier there.
If I move, I’ll finally feel free.
An aligned life sounds like:
What am I actually solving for?
What do I want my life to look like in 5 years?
What structure needs to change for that to happen?
Moving abroad is not a small pivot.
It will effect:
Your children’s identity
Your business operations
Your legal and financial infrastructure
Your marriage
Your community
Your sense of self
This is not a weekend experiment; it needs to be architected.
Being A Global Citizen Is Not the Same as Living Like a Nomad
Let’s talk about language.
A digital nomad optimizes for mobility.
A global citizen optimizes for stability across borders.
Those are not the same thing.
Nomad energy is:
Short-term leases
Flexibility over roots
Experience over infrastructure
Movement as identity
Global citizen energy is:
Long-term thinking
Legal clarity
Educational strategy
Business continuity
Community building
Intergenerational impact
If you value stability…
If you are raising children, building a serious business, protecting wealth, or thinking about legacy…
You are not looking for a nomadic lifestyle.
You are looking for intentional global positioning.
That requires depth.
The Question No One Is Asking You
Before you move, ask yourself:
What problem am I trying to solve?
Is this environmental or internal?
If I changed geography tomorrow, what in my business would feel unstable?
What in my life would improve and what would become harder?
Who will I become in this new place?
If you cannot answer those clearly, you are not ready to decide.
And that’s not judgment.
That’s wisdom.
I’ve Moved Countries With Babies, Businesses, and Big Decisions
I did not move because it looked aesthetic.
I moved from the US to the UK.
From the UK to Copenhagen.
Back to the UK.
And now to Doha.
Each move required:
Immigration strategy
Business restructuring
School research
Emotional recalibration
Financial planning
Marriage conversations
Community rebuilding
This is not something you do casually.
It is something you do consciously.
Moving Abroad Should Expand You Not Distract You
If you move to avoid your business problems, they will follow you.
If you move to avoid personal growth, it will catch up with you.
If you move without clarity, you will feel disoriented instead of empowered.
But when you move with intention?
You gain:
Strategic positioning
Lifestyle alignment
Global access
Expanded perspective
Deep resilience
That is different.
That is Global Citizen energy.
The Global Life Project Is Not About Where to Move
It’s about how to think.
Before the scouting trips.
Before the visa conversations.
Before the school tours.
We start with:
Why now?
What next?
How do we design this correctly?
Because geography is leverage.
And leverage without clarity is chaos.
If you are considering moving abroad, slow down.
Not to delay your dream.
But to build it properly.
You don’t need a relocation influencer.
You need decision architecture.
You are not trying to escape your life.
You are designing it.
And that requires intention.

Relocating from California to Chile recently has been a deeply transformational experience for me. I’m still adjusting to my new surroundings and trying to establish a life with my husband here..it helps that his family & friends live close by. I’m so relieved to be out of the US and starting over, although I’m missing my old routines, favorite places and family & friends. Definitely helps me stay positive when I reflect on WHY I left, one reason being to simplify my life, as it was way too stressful & hectic in CA. I’ve absolutely been stretched to the limit learning a new language and culture and I’m hoping it gets a bit easier and I feel like I’m “home” sometime soon..but I’m really proud of myself for taking the leap!
My husband and I are in a decision making process right now and it is HARD. He is dual UK/US and I am US/Canadian. We are considering a move back to the UK (we are in the U.S.). Jobs, kids and stability keep us rooted here but there at many reasons to move back to the UK. We are stuck as to what the right choice is. Our youngest is a freshman in high school, so it’s complicated and our older 2 aren’t keen to join us in the UK, at least in the short term. *sigh*
