As an American living in Italy, I recently had a health issue that landed me in the Emergency Room in Rome. My first impression was that it was about like an Emergency Room in NY or any other American city. But later I realized, it was the same minus the gun violence victims or the fentanyl addicts or the desperate just seeking shelter. It's surprising how Americans always assume that life in the United States is safer or easier than anywhere else. It isn't and hasn't been for about 30 years.
Beautifully stated. I learned a similar lesson during the pandemic when I lived across Vietnam, Dubai, and Rwanda — 3 very different cultures. But I felt cared for, even as a foreigner. I learned what it meant to put people and their wellbeing first over money. While my family and friends in America were on the verge of a mental breakdown, I was well fed, connected to community both expat and local, and picked up watercolor painting as a way to de-stress. I’m happy you and your family are safe and you get to even make this kind of decision at all. It’s still a privilege to choose to live this way.

This is true. We have been brainwashed to believe that it is the best place on earth.

wow. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn this lesson. Also wellbeing over money should always be the case.
